Deregulation 

The federal government and New York State have changed the laws and regulations governing the electricity and natural gas industry to promote competition between energy suppliers, as a means to achieve lower prices and to allow market forces to play a greater role in determining future prices. As a result of that effort, all customers in New York State are able to choose their energy suppliers.
